Why Free African

The heritage of The Free African Society and the movements that sprang from it, are as old as America itself. Reclaiming the moniker and cultural identity of “Free African People” re-establishes ownership of our historic legacy, connects us to our inheritance and affirms that our work is an extension of and rooted in the Free African Society. This identity establishes our voice and our work beyond our religious and denominational affiliation into a diasporic community spanning throughout the united states and abroad, in addition to creating a big tent to welcome our AMEZ, CME, Black UMC, and other religious traditions born out of resistance into a unified and collective voice. Being “Free African” empowers and affirms our community internally and fortifies us externally, not simply as an organization, but a united people. Being Free African is not about race, color or creed, but about our connection to the Legacy of the Free African Society and commitment to the principle of its legacy.

Our Guiding Principles

People Are The Priority: We believe that all policy, laws, resources and ideas should be people focused and service driven. How we use land, resources, shelter, and money should always prioritize people over institutional or organizational interest, businesses and government priorities, and even individual self interest. A people centered approach will always wield the best results in critical times.

Inclusion and Safety: Anvil Institute is committed to serving as a unified and safe political home for Free African People of every walk of life, regardless of ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender identity, or geographic standing. We hold that everyone possesses an inalienable right to freedom, protection under the law, human decency, respect, and love that empowers and does not impede. We are committed to uphold this commitment by any means necessary.

Radical Pragmatism: We prioritize practical, real-world outcomes over ideological posturing. Our strategy involves setting aside partisan politics to align with simple, equitable policies that effectively and efficiently address the people's needs, ensuring the greatest positive impact for the widest possible representation of our community.

Non-Partisanhip: We recognize that our communities are not a monolith but operate across a wide spectrum of political thought and ideology. Our movement is people-centered, with policies and actions driven by the genuine needs of the community and our most vulnerable rather than the restrictive agendas of established partisan political bodies.

Liberalism: We are liberal in our unwavering commitment to social justice and the essential principles of community care and mutual aid. We commit to a process where all policy is rigorously evaluated through the lens of its ultimate impact on the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our community.

Conservatism: We champion a conservative view regarding personal autonomy and liberty, asserting that every individual has the fundamental responsibility to live a life true to their personal belief systems. This freedom, however, is strictly contingent upon the principle that one's choices must not impede, oppress, or infringe upon the life choices and well-being of others.
